Why We Started Chronicle Society

By the founders of Chronicle Society
History has always been something we’ve loved. Not just the big events that make it into textbooks, but the smaller stories too — the unusual people, forgotten places, strange traditions and little details that can make the past feel surprisingly close to home.
That’s why we created Chronicle Society.
We wanted to create something that felt different from simply reading an article online. Something you could actually look forward to arriving through the letterbox each month, sit down with a cup of tea, and spend some time exploring.
So, What Is Chronicle Society?
Chronicle Society is a monthly history subscription created and run by the two of us.
For £10 a month, plus £3.69 shipping, members receive a new physical issue every month, with each issue centred around a particular place, period, person or historical theme.
Every month is different.
One issue might take you across the world to explore the history of a country. Another might uncover stories from a particular county, explore a fascinating historical figure, or dive into an event that you may never have heard about before.
Our aim is simple: to make history interesting, accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Why Do We Do It?
We think history can sometimes feel intimidating.
There are enormous books, complicated dates, academic language and thousands of years of information to work through.
But history doesn't have to be like that.
Sometimes the most memorable stories are the little ones.
The story of an unusual building in your local town. A strange law from hundreds of years ago. A forgotten explorer. A bizarre tradition. An object that seems completely ordinary today but once had a fascinating purpose.
Those are the stories we love finding.
We wanted Chronicle Society to be a place where you can discover those stories without needing to be a historian yourself.
It's Just the Two of Us
Chronicle Society is independently created and run by us.
We research the subjects, plan the issues, work on the content, organise the designs and prepare the publications before they make their way to our members.
It's a genuine passion project, and that's important to us.
We're not trying to create a huge corporate publication. We want Chronicle Society to feel personal — like something made by people who genuinely care about the stories they're sharing.
Where possible, we also love working with local historians, artists, researchers and other independent creatives.
We believe there are so many talented people with incredible knowledge and stories to share, and we'd rather help bring those voices into Chronicle Society whenever we can.
Bringing History Into the Modern World
You'll also notice that we don't necessarily create everything in the traditional way.
We may use modern tools, including AI-assisted tools, to help us create certain images, illustrations or elements of content.
We're open about that because we believe it's important to be honest about how modern creative tools are being used.
At the same time, we don't want technology to take away from the human side of history.
The research, ideas, editing and decisions behind each issue remain a huge part of what we do. And wherever possible, we want to work alongside real historians, researchers and artists.
What We Hope You'll Get From It
More than anything, we hope Chronicle Society gives you a reason to be curious.
Maybe you'll learn something you've never heard before.
Maybe you'll discover a place you've never visited.
Maybe you'll find yourself telling someone else a strange historical fact over dinner.
Or perhaps you'll simply enjoy having something physical to sit down and read away from a screen.
That's what we're trying to create.
A small monthly reminder that there's always another story waiting to be discovered.
Welcome to the Chronicle Society
We're incredibly excited to build this little community and see where it goes.
Every issue is another opportunity for us to explore something new, share the things we've discovered and hopefully inspire other people to become just as fascinated by history as we are.
So, from the two of us — thank you for being here.
We hope you'll join us for the next chapter.
Chronicle Society
Stories worth discovering. History worth keeping.
